30th August 2009

One photo has been unearthed (with more to come) of the display v Bohs yesterday and is now online @ the Gallery.

29th August 2009 - Glentoran 1-2 Bohs

A credible draw against the 'minted' League of Ireland champions was just minutes away. That's football.

Display wise, Legion 1882 went for something different - a display project entitled 'Modern Day Heroes'. This involved 4 giant two-sticks with the faces of Glentoran's 4 current longest serving players; Elliot Morris, Colin Nixon, Paul Leeman and Michael Halliday on them with their respective names below them. A message banner was unfurled with the saying 'Our Modern Day Heroes' much to the curiosity of the grandstand. The TIFO flags took their regular position at the front of the stand. Photos of this display will hopefully appear mid-week. In the mean time, these pictures are the final design of the two sticks (without the names).

Legion 1882 went out with a point to prove today after some self criticism on consistent atmosphere this season. We would like to thank everyone, especially the growing number of faces who are appearing in the 'Legion corner' who made today's atmosphere special and hopefully set a benchmark for the rest of the season. For all of those people who went home disappointed but with a thumping headache and a hoarse voice, all is not lost; our favourite away day is next up. Bring on Coleraine. Onwards and upwards.

27th August 2009

Legion 1882 have now built ourselves up a small collection of memorabilia to sell to Glentoran supporters. These are T-Shirts, stickers and also bracelets.

The T-Shirts are a bargain at £10 each and come in sizes small, medium, large and XL. They are black with the Legion 1882 logo on the front and 'Legion 1882' on the back in the official group font. (Apologies for the quality of the photos, they arrived via MMS from Thailand)

The bracelets are £4 per bracelet and are red, green and black with the text "Legion 1882" across the bracelet. These are hand sewn and look the part.

Finally the stickers are £2 for every bag of 15. Mark your territory Glentoran style by sticking the stickers around your area, in away grounds, in public places, on holiday, basically anywhere you want!

All 3 of the above merchandise are expected to go fast. After 1 day of selling we have already sold a large number of all 3. In the coming months we will be adding scarves (due to arrive soon), badges and hooded sweatshirts to our collection of memorabilia.

Don't forget, all money made from this merchandise goes DIRECTLY to Legion 1882 for materials etc so we can continue to create noise and colour to help the boys keep the Gibson cup where it belongs.

To purchase any of the above drop an email to matthew@legion1882.com or approach any group member.

The Ballymac bus to Coleraine on Tuesday 1st September leaves the clubrooms on Wilgar Street at 6pm. All visitors are welcome.

23rd August 2009 - Cliftonville 1-2 Glentoran

An unofficial target of 10 points from a tricky opening 4 games has been met and things are looking bright. On the display front, there was a 3000+ page confetti display designed to create a mess ;).

On another very important note, the recession affects us all and is evident in that Legion 1882 do not have the money for such a variety of displays in a short space of time. As has been mentioned before, there is a donation facility available to your right for those who wish to help out. We would like to stress that every penny means more than ever and can help us ensure a very colourful start to September.

Thank you for all who have helped out to date

From Belfast Telegraph, 21st August 09 - Glentoran fans can help title bid
Fans of the Big Two are notoriously hard to please — the expectancy levels at both Glentoran and Linfield are arguably higher than all the other Carling Premiership clubs put together..

However, on one side of the Big Two divide there seems to be a sea change and one of their heroes believes it could be a crucial factor in the race for Gibson Cup glory this year.

Glentoran striker Gary Hamilton has been buoyed by how Glenmen have got behind their team so far this campaign and with a trip to Cliftonville next up on the fixture schedule, the former Northern Ireland striker is hoping the green, red and black hordes keep up their own early season good form.

“I know last year a lot of people got on our backs in some games and we got quite a lot of stick which although we won the league, at times I could understand because the way we were playing wasn’t always as good as it should be,” he said.

“I have to give the fans a lot of credit so far because in all the games this season they have really got behind us.

“They turned out in big numbers at Distillery on a terrible day and then last week at Portadown, even when we were a goal down they kept us going and never got on top of us.

“Again against Linfield they sang from start to finish and all the boys will tell you that that makes a huge difference. It gives us the confidence to go out an express ourselves, knowing we have that support.”

Legion 1882 would like to thank everyone who has made this possible (not just members) but ALL fans who have contributed in some way. Singing for your team goes a long way and has been stressed several times from ourselves and the players. It has certainly made me feel more passionate about the season ahead. Bless em all..

19th August 2009 - Glentoran 2-2 Scum

I'd have taken 7 points from the opening 3 tricky games when the fixtures came out but I can't help feel it was a missed opportunity to put some clear daylight between ourselves and our rivals.

Display wise, Legion 1882 had very large message banners commemorating the return to The Oval, 60 years almost to the day. One said "20th AUGUST 1949" and the other was a line from the old Glentoran song,  Pride of the County Down - "NEVER MORE TO ROAM". There was also a message banner to welcome new signing Keith Gillespie - "VIVA GILLESPIE!". Among this there was TIFO flags, a crowd surfer, some green flares and a few "€" posters for our mate Winky ;)

There is currently ONE picture from last night in the Gallery (the VIVA GILLESPIE! poster with the player himself in front of it). Other pictures of the display have yet to surface.

Pictures from Saturdays display v Portadown are now online @ the Gallery.

16th August 2009 - Portadown 1-2 Glentoran

What a result!!

A great atmosphere and a successful display as far as Legion 1882 concerned. For those who did not witness it, we did a 'chaos' display which involved 300 till rolls, 3 large TIFO flags, a few smoke bombs, several two-sticks and a flare. It isn't the hardest thing in the world to do but it worked effectively and made quite a mess on the pitch. Unfortunately there isn't any photos at this time although a photographer or two was spotted taking some, hopefully they surface soon.

Tensions were not helped by the clown of an official running the game and this only served to stir up a bit of understandable anger in the stands as the game progressed. Gary Hamilton scoring the winner with the last kick is as sweet as it comes.

Never has the words 'completely stolen' been so apt ;)

14th August 2009

Tomorrow is the big one: the match that Legion 1882 have been waiting for. Two battles await - on the pitch and off the pitch.

On the pitch there is the increasing rivalry between the teams which has seen results hard to predict and tensions raised beyond that of an average Irish League match. The Champions are fresh off the back of two 4-0 wins and Portadown have met the cold face of reality in their first match back. History has shown that Portadown produce mediocre/average performances against the likes of Limivady and raise their game against the bigger teams. Tomorrow I believe we can come away with a firm win and gain momentum going into Tuesday night against the scum.

As for the battle off the pitch, it is documented that Legion 1882 have a bit of a rivalry with the Portadown group (inbreeds). As per usual, Legion 1882 will be at the match to be heard and to sing the team to victory. Again, this is where YOU come into play. The 900 tickets have all (bar 7 to date) sold out, so a bumper atmosphere potential is there. Let's show the inbreeds that we have a set of Champion fans. Legion 1882 will be at the top of the middle section for those who wish to stand with us.

Welcome to the big boys league Ports ;)

9th August 2009

Fantastic start to the season from Legion 1882's point of view. A Simple but effective display coupled with a bit of atmosphere and a brilliant performance from the lads on the pitch made for an exciting return to competitive football. Long may that continue! Two photos from the display online @ the Gallery (in the 09/10 section)

7th August 2009

The beginning of the season is just one day away and Legion 1882 have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure a successful start to the season in the stands. This being our first full season as an active group, we want to find more creative ways of increasing the atmosphere at grounds both home and away. First and foremost, the champions deserve a champion reception tomorrow; it is up to the fans to give them what they deserve. Everyone knows Glentoran's (in)ability to retain a title in modern times, now we believe that they can retain it more than ever. A big part of this comes down to the support: echo from the old 'Forza Glentoran' - the 12th man can make a difference! YOU are the 12th man and you are charged with cheering your wee team to victory.

Legion 1882 want to make this season as successful and memorable as possible. First up is the recent launch of our very own website along with the new Legion 1882 logo. Next up is the start of our very own merchandise range beginning with scarves and t-shirts of which details will be revealed very soon. Maybe, just maybe this is the beginning of a very special season. Bless 'em all.
